Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) affects an estimated 10% to 50% of adults, depending on the type of surgical procedure.
The type of surgical procedure influences both the incidence of CPSP (e.g., 35 per cent after thoracotomy and breast surgery, 20 per cent after knee arthroplasty, and 10 per cent after hip arthroplasty) and its intensity (e.g., joint arthroplasty is greater than gynaecological or other visceral operations).
