Occipital neuralgia is a type of chronic headache that starts in the occipital area and spreads through the occipital nerves (which run from the top of your spinal cord to your scalp). It can be triggered quickly, even with a simple touch like brushing your hair.
Sometimes, intense, piercing, stabbing and sharp pain can occur, lasting only a few seconds to a few minutes. The tenderness around the nerves may persist afterwards.
