It is characterised by low back pain, with or without the concurrence of radicular lower limb symptoms (pain, numbness and tingling, weakness) in the presence of radiologically confirmed degenerative disc disease. Radicular symptoms occur when a nerve is pinched.

Herniated discs, trauma, and bone spurs are common causes. Sometimes, the only reason is wear and tear associated with ageing. Degeneration and spine weakening can cause a shift enough to pinch a nerve.

Radiculopathy can occur in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar areas. Lumbar radiculopathy is also called sciatica because the nerve roots that make up the sciatic nerve are often involved.
